Recently, Chen Qi, Deputy Chief Physician of Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Department at Tongji University Affiliated Yangzhi Rehabilitation Hospital, and Guo Jin, Attending Physician of Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Department, walked into the live broadcast room of "Health Smart House" to educate citizens on how to exercise safely and effectively for hypertensive patients.

In May, when I gave a science popularization lecture at a community hospital, I asked a question: Which individual or family member had hypertension? There were over 100 people present at the time, but only a few did not raise their hands. Roughly speaking, the incidence of hypertension is very high. "Chen Qi said, according to data statistics, there are approximately 250 million hypertensive patients in China, and almost one in every three adults has hypertension. For people over 60 years old, this proportion reaches 50%, with one in two individuals suffering from hypertension. More seriously, less than half of the population with hypertension are aware of it, and about 80% are aware of it and receive treatment. The control rate for reaching treatment standards is 37.6%.

The large number of people with uncontrolled blood pressure poses significant risks. Hypertension is prone to comorbidity with acute cerebrovascular disease, and anticoagulant and antiplatelet therapy is effective. However, the number of hypertensive patients receiving anticoagulant and antiplatelet therapy is lower, and the risk of acute cerebrovascular disease is higher. Despite years of effort, China has made significant progress in the prevention and control of hypertension, but this work still has a long way to go.

The impact of exercise on hypertension is mainly manifested in: exercise can not only lower blood pressure, but also reduce the mortality rate of hypertension complications. Research has found that increasing exercise can reduce cardiovascular disease mortality in hypertensive patients by 16% to 67%. A large amount of exercise with little or no exercise can reduce the mortality rate of cardiovascular diseases by 20% to 67%. Low to moderate exercise can reduce cardiovascular mortality by 16% to 22% compared to inactivity or sedentary behavior.

At the same time, it should be noted that although exercise therapy is beneficial for lowering blood pressure and reducing the damage caused by diseases to the body, it is not suitable for every patient with hypertension. Therefore, it is important to exercise under the guidance of doctors, especially rehabilitation doctors.

The main exercise methods for hypertensive patients are aerobic exercise, such as walking, jogging, swimming, cycling, climbing, mountaineering, ball games, fitness exercises, etc. Chen Qi said that the characteristics of these exercises are low intensity, rhythmic, uninterrupted, and long duration. The time for exercise is: It is best for elderly people to choose afternoon and evening for exercise. Because hypertensive patients often have morning blood pressure fluctuations, around 4-6 am, around 10 am, and 2-4 pm are periods of relatively high blood pressure, and the incidence of malignant events is relatively concentrated. Morning exercise may cause a sharp increase in blood pressure and trigger cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events. Overall exercise rehabilitation exercise can lower blood pressure, reduce medication usage, and medical expenses, significantly improving blood pressure. In the long run, one can control blood pressure at normal levels through their own normal physiological reactions, enhance physical fitness, and improve quality of life.

In short, hypertension treatment is a comprehensive and continuous health management project. Hypertensive patients should adhere to long-term, regular, safe, and effective exercise within their ability range, preferably under the guidance of a doctor, while maintaining stable blood pressure control.
