According to a survey, 30% to 40% of elderly people have sleep problems such as difficulty falling asleep, waking up early, and waking up frequently at night. In addition, memory also decreases year by year, and even anxiety occurs. So, how does traditional Chinese medicine respond to these "geriatric diseases"?

In this issue, we specially invite Wang Xinhua, the director of the Geriatrics Department of Zhejiang Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, to talk with you about the effective methods for preventing and treating elderly diseases.

01

Elderly urination frequency

Treatment based on syndrome differentiation

Case sharing: The patient was unconscious three times for unknown reasons and was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) for treatment. After consultation, it was found that the patient had obvious dry mouth and poor urination on weekdays, with a daily water intake of 10000 milliliters.

From this, it can be inferred that the patient suffered from water poisoning caused by excessive drinking water, leading to hyponatremia coma.

Later, the patient went to Director Wang for medical treatment, and Director Wang treated him with Wuling Powder.

Wuling Powder is mainly used to treat poor urination and thirst. From the perspective of traditional Chinese medicine, if the bladder fluid cannot reach the mouth, thirst and dry mouth may occur.

Urinary frequency, from the perspective of modern medicine, may be related to residual urine, which continuously stimulates the bladder and causes urination.

For such patients, Director Wang added two herbs, Poria cocos and Cinnamomum cassia twig, to the treatment formula according to the "Treatise on Cold Damage". Poria cocos unblocked the water, while Cinnamomum cassia twig transformed the qi and promoted the water, ultimately achieving the ideal treatment effect for the patients.

If there are elderly patients, considering that their kidneys are relatively weak, they should be treated with Wuzi Yanzhong Pill. "Wuzi" includes raspberries, goji berries, dodder seeds, plantain seeds, and Schisandra chinensis. This prescription is taken from the "Danxi Heart Method" by Zhu Danxi, a famous Chinese medicine practitioner in Yiwu, Zhejiang.

Director Wang stated that there are different types of frequent urination in elderly people, and specific treatment needs to be based on individual circumstances and syndrome differentiation.

02

Elderly insomnia

Traditional Chinese Medicine Treatment

The elderly are a high-risk group for sleep disorders and mental illnesses, and comprehensive assessment of the elderly also attaches great importance to the assessment of depression, anxiety, and insomnia in the elderly.

Elderly insomnia

Among them, insomnia caused by gallbladder heat and spleen cold can be treated with the prescription of Chaihu Guizhi Ganjiang Tang.

According to the "Treatise on Febrile Fever and Miscellaneous Diseases", "On the fifth or sixth day of typhoid fever, one has already sweated and regained it. The chest and ribs are full, with slight nodules, and it is difficult to urinate. One is thirsty but does not vomit, but sweats from the head and travels between cold and hot. This is not resolved, and Chaihu Guizhi Ganjiang Tang is the main ingredient

Chaihu Guizhi Ganjiang Tang includes several medicinal herbs, including Chaihu, Ganjiang, Huangling, oyster, Tianfen, roasted licorice, and Guizhi. Guizhi, Ganjiang, and Licorice are used to tonify the spleen, while Chaihu and Huangqi are used to clear gallbladder heat.
