The predecessor of the college was Hengyang Railway Engineering School, a national key vocational school under the former Ministry of Railways, founded in 1951. With a long history of education and brilliant achievements, it is known as the "Huangpu Military Academy of Railways". The first president was General Guo Weicheng, former Minister of the Ministry of Railways and Commander of the Railway Corps. In 2005, it was registered and upgraded to a regular higher vocational and technical college by the Ministry of Education.
