Background

Li Guoqiang, an 82-year-old retired worker from Hainan, China, has faced a lifetime of hardships to raise his three children. After retirement, he finally had the opportunity to relax and enjoy his golden years. He enjoyed smoking, drinking, going for walks in the park, and walking his dog.

Onset of Symptoms

On March 12, 2015, while walking his dog in the park, Li began experiencing sudden chest tightness and dizziness. He initially dismissed these symptoms as signs of aging and fatigue, resting on a bench for a while.

Persistent Symptoms and Diagnosis

However, Li's symptoms continued intermittently, including headaches, fatigue, and a feeling of anxiety. On April 9, 2015, while picking up his granddaughter from school, Li experienced severe chest pain, shortness of breath, and sweating. He realized the seriousness of his condition and called his son to take him to the nearest hospital.

Blood tests, an electrocardiogram (ECG), neck artery ultrasound, and cardiac ultrasound revealed multiple abnormalities. Li's cholesterol levels were elevated (total cholesterol 6.1 mmol/L, triglycerides 2.7 mmol/L), and his ECG showed ST-segment elevation indicative of heart muscle ischemia. The ultrasound revealed impaired myocardial motion, ventricular wall abnormalities, and an 8-mm carotid artery plaque.

Understanding the Cause

The doctor explained that the carotid artery plaque was a buildup of calcium, fat, cholesterol, and cellular debris in the artery wall, leading to hardening and narrowing. Factors contributing to plaque formation include high blood pressure, smoking, and a high-fat diet.

Treatment and Complications

Li's large carotid artery plaque required aggressive treatment. He was hospitalized for intravenous therapy and was prescribed statins to lower his cholesterol levels. He was advised to make significant lifestyle changes, including, limiting alcohol consumption, and adopting a healthy diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol.

Recurrence of Symptoms and Subsequent Recovery

Despite initial improvement, Li relapsed in May 2015, experiencing dizziness and shortness of breath. He was rushed to the hospital, where he received emergency treatment that stabilized his condition. This near-death experience motivated Li to take his condition more seriously.

Rehabilitation and Remission

Li followed his doctor's advice, quitting smoking and adhering to his medication regimen. He also implemented a comprehensive plan to improve his health.

Six months later, Li's blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and other health parameters had returned to normal. Remarkably, the 8-mm carotid artery plaque had nearly disappeared. This is a rare occurrence in medical practice.

The Three Keys to Success

Li shared the following three key practices that contributed to his remarkable recovery:

1. Regular Exercise: Exercise promotes fat burning and improves cardiovascular health, reducing the risk of plaque buildup.

2. Dietary Management: Avoiding high-fat foods minimizes the risk of arterial damage and plaque formation.

3. Emotional Well-being: Reducing stress and maintaining a positive mindset promotes overall vascular health.

Li's story highlights the importance of adhering to medical advice, making lifestyle changes, and maintaining a positive outlook. Regularly monitoring health parameters, seeking timely medical attention, and implementing these three key strategies can significantly improve outcomes for individuals with cardiovascular disease.
