Northeast Agricultural University was founded in Harbin in 1948. It was originally called Northeast Agricultural University. It was the first ordinary agricultural college founded by the CPC in the Jiefang District. Liu Da, a well-known educator and the first mayor of Harbin, was the first president of the university. Since its establishment, the university has been under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Northeast Administrative Committee, the Ministry of Higher Education of the People's Republic of China, the Ministry of Agriculture of the People's Republic of China, the Agricultural Commission of Heilongjiang Province, and the Department of Education of Heilongjiang Province. In 1981, it was designated as a key university under the provincial government of Heilongjiang Province. In 1994, it merged with the Agricultural Economic Management Cadre College of Heilongjiang Province to form Northeast Agricultural University. In 1996, it became one of the first batch of key universities under the national "211 Project".

Harbin University of Science and Technology (Hust) is located in Harbin, a city with beautiful scenery and known as the "Ice City" of northern China. It is a multi-disciplinary university characterized by mechanical and electrical disciplines and coordinated development of multiple disciplines such as science, engineering, economics, management, literature, and law. It is the largest science and engineering university in Heilongjiang Province. Harbin Medical University was founded in 1926. It was formed by the merger of the former Harbin Medical University (its predecessor was Harbin Medical Special School established by Chinese medical pioneer Dr. Wu Lien-teh) and the former Xingshan (now Hegang City) First and Second Branches of China Medical University (its predecessor was the Chinese Workers' and Peasants' Red Army Health School established by the CPC in Ruijin, Jiangxi Province in 1931). Northeast Forestry University was established in 1952, based on the Forestry Department of Zhejiang University Agricultural College and the Forestry Department of Northeast Agricultural College. Harbin Engineering University is located in the beautiful Songhua River - Harbin, an ice city in the north. The College of Humanities of Northeast Normal University is an independent undergraduate college applied for by Northeast Normal University according to the new mechanism and model. Its predecessor was the Jilin Provincial Foreign Language and Cultural Exchange Center established in July 1988. In 1991 and 2000, Jilin International Language and Culture College and Jilin Vocational College of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation were established successively. In 2001, a new secondary college was established, Northeast Normal University's School of International Business and Economics, and full-time undergraduate education began to be implemented. In February 2004, the College of Humanities of Northeast Normal University was officially established with the approval of the Ministry of Education.

Boda College of Jilin Normal University is an independent college approved by the Ministry of Education with qualifications for regular undergraduate education.
