The predecessor of Shangrao Normal College was Shangrao Normal College established in June 1958. In 1959, Shangrao Normal College and Shangrao Industrial College merged and reorganized into Jiangxi Northeastern University. In 1978, with the approval of the State Council, Shangrao Teachers' College was re established. In March 2000, with the approval of the Ministry of Education and the Jiangxi Provincial Government, Shangrao Normal University was established. In November 2005, the college successfully passed the evaluation of undergraduate teaching level by the Ministry of Education, and obtained the right to confer a bachelor's degree in February 2004.
