The school was founded in 1949, formerly known as Changchun Electric Vocational School, and was the first power engineering school established in New China. In 1978, it was renamed as Northeast Electric Power College. Originally under the jurisdiction of the State Power Corporation (formerly the Ministry of Electric Power Industry and the Ministry of Energy), since 2000, a management model of "central and local co construction, with local management as the main focus" has been implemented. In 2005, the school was renamed Northeast Electric Power University.
