The predecessor of Ningxia Medical University was Ningxia Medical College, founded in 1958 and the only higher medical institution in Ningxia. In 1962, the school was merged into Ningxia University and renamed as the Department of Medicine of Ningxia University. In 1972, Shanghai Railway Medical College relocated to Yinchuan and merged with the Medical Department of Ningxia University to rebuild Ningxia Medical College. In 2002, Ningxia Health School and Ningxia Nurse School were merged into Ningxia Medical College. In August 2008, with the approval of the Ministry of Education and the People's Government of the Autonomous Region, the school was officially renamed as "Ningxia Medical University". Since its establishment, the school has trained more than 20000 medical talents at all levels, covering cities and villages in Ningxia, supporting the blue sky of Ningxia's medical and health industry.

Ningxia Normal University is a full-time regular undergraduate normal university led and managed by the People's Government of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. It is located in the historic city of Guyuan City at the foot of Liupanshan in the southern part of Ningxia. Its predecessor was "Liupanshan University" established with the approval of the Autonomous Region Party Committee in 1975. The school was founded in May 1978, originally named "Xianyang Specialized Department of Shaanxi Normal University". In December 1978, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, Xianyang Normal College was established. In May 2001, Xianyang Normal College merged with Shaanxi Xianyang Education College established in 1983 to establish Xianyang Normal College. In October 2004, Shaanxi Radio and Television University Xianyang Branch was merged into Xianyang Normal University.
