Its predecessor was Suzhou Normal College founded in 1958 and Changshu Vocational University established in 1984. In 1989, with the approval of the former National Education Commission and the Jiangsu Provincial People's Government, the two schools merged into Changshu Higher Vocational College. In 2001, Jiangsu Population School was incorporated. On May 12, 2004, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, Changshu Institute of Technology was established on the basis of Changshu Higher Vocational College. The school is a provincial-level undergraduate institution with a focus on science and engineering, and features applied technology and teacher education.
