The school is located in Furong District, Changsha City, covering an area of 2.27 square kilometers. The campus environment is elegant and the air is fresh, making it a garden style unit in Hunan Province. The school was established on March 9, 1951, by the merger of Hunan Provincial Xiuye Agricultural and Forestry College and Hunan University Agricultural College, and was named "Hunan Agricultural College". In November of the same year, Chairman Mao Zedong personally wrote the school name. Its predecessor can be traced back to the Xiuye School founded in 1903. In February 1994, it was renamed Hunan Agricultural University with the approval of the former National Education Commission.
