Site Description: Wuhan University is a key comprehensive university directly under the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China, and a key university under the national "Project 985" and "211 Project". Wuhan University dates back to the Self Strengthening School established by the Qing government at the request of Zhang Zhidong, Governor General of Huguang in the late Qing Dynasty in 1893. After undergoing inheritance and evolution, it was named National Wuhan University in 1928 and was one of the first batch of national universities in modern China. In 1946, the school had formed a school structure where six major colleges of literature, law, science, engineering, agriculture, and medicine were running side by side. After the establishment of the People's Republic of China, Wuhan University received high attention from the Party and government. In 1958, Chairman Mao Zedong personally visited Wuhan University for inspection. In 1993, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Wuhan University, Jiang Zemin and other party and state leaders wrote congratulatory inscriptions. Since the reform and opening up, Wuhan University has taken the lead in carrying out educational and teaching reforms among domestic universities, with various undertakings thriving and overall strength significantly increasing.
