In March 1994, it was approved by the former National Education Commission as a regular undergraduate institution (Ministry of Education code 10643), and is the only multidisciplinary regular undergraduate institution in the hinterland of the Three Gorges Reservoir Area. In 2004, it successfully passed the undergraduate teaching level evaluation of the Ministry of Education and is now a counterpart support unit for Southeast University, a university directly under the Ministry of Education.
