Hunan University
Hunan University is a comprehensive national key university with a solid foundation in science, strong strength in engineering, unique cultural background in humanities, and distinctive economic management disciplines. Directly under the Ministry of Education, it is a key university in the national "211 Project" and "Project 985". The school originated from Yuelu Academy, one of the four famous academies of the Song Dynasty and founded in the ninth year of Kaibao (976 AD) of Emperor Taizu of the Song Dynasty. It has undergone changes in the Song, Yuan, Ming, Qing and other dynasties and has always maintained the continuity of cultural education. In 1903, Yuelu Academy was restructured as Hunan Higher Education College, renamed Hunan University in 1926, and became one of the more than ten national universities under the Ministry of Education of the Nationalist Government in 1937. After the establishment of the People's Republic of China, the famous philosopher and educator Li Da became the first president of Hunan University after its liberation. Chairman Mao Zedong personally inscribed the name of the university. In 1953, the national departments were adjusted, and Hunan University was renamed as Central South College of Civil Engineering and Architecture and Hunan University of Technology. In 1959, the original name of Hunan University was restored. Since 1963, it has been under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Machinery Industry of the People's Republic of China. In 1978, it was listed as a national key university and in 1998, it was adjusted to be a university directly under the Ministry of Education. In 2000, during the adjustment of the layout and structure of higher education institutions nationwide, Hunan University and Hunan University of Finance and Economics merged to form the new Hunan University.
