China Environmental Protection Foundation
In recognition of Professor Qu Geping, the first Director of the National Environmental Protection Agency and former Chairman of the Environmental and Resource Protection Committee of the National People's Congress, for his outstanding contributions in participating in and leading China's environmental protection cause, Professor Qu Geping was awarded the United Nations Environment Award and a $100000 prize at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in June 1992. After winning the award, Professor Qu Geping suggested establishing the China Environmental Protection Foundation based on this prize money to promote the development of China's environmental protection cause. His suggestion has received widespread praise and support from all sectors of society. With the support of relevant leaders and departments of the Party and the state, the China Environmental Protection Foundation was officially established in April 1993. The China Environmental Protection Foundation is the first national public fund registered by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and the Ministry of Civil Affairs, specializing in environmental protection in China.
